Name: Alessandro Tarabotti
Door: Door Pass, Submissive
Canon: Parasol Protectorate
Canon Point: The Full Moon of June of 1850. Basically, the night Alessandro goes off to die.
Age: 45
Appearance: Canonically, we're told he's from a long line of men who made Tall, Dark, and Brooding their business. He purposely dresses in a dandified manor and wouldn't be caught dead in a poorly tied cravat. I use Richard Armitage as his PB
History: https://gailcarriger.fandom.com/wiki/Alessandro_Tarabotti
Personality:
“In Mr Tarabotti’s world, nothing excused a limp cravat, even the dead heat of Egypt at high noon.”
Alessandro is fastidious and deeply vain. He crafts and hones his image very carefully. Presentation matters and it shows in everything he wears and everything he does. He purpose picks out clothing that it cut just so to hide his weapons or his physicality. He acts in a rudely flippant manner, seemingly more style than substance. No one really expects much from a frivolous fashionista. He curates his style and mannerisms into a foppish bore, happy to indulge in insulting others dress and actions while he himself is actually very badly behaved. His favorite subject of ridicule are the English.
"That sounds like my father. He wasn't particularly loyal to any organization."
According to all accounts, Alessandro was, during his lifetime, very much an individualist. It's every man for himself and he doesn't hesitate to look out for his own self-interests first. Unless a situation directly affects him in some manner, he honestly could care less about it. He works most of his young life to free himself from the Templars, he also refuses an appointment of power from Queen Victoria. He wants nothing to do with being forced to live under someone else's commands. If he takes a side, it's purely for personal reasons. He helps the vampire queen of Egypt spread the God Breaker plague because he has a vested interest in the plague, how it works, and also keeping himself from joining the ranks of the mummies he put into the desert. He goes after the Woolsey pack Alpha because he could no longer stand to see a person he was having an affair with suffer any longer. Of Alessandro, his valet outright states that “They never could entirely control preternaturals. It’s your pragmatism. Your kind cannot be persuaded by faith; pure logic must be applied.” There is always a personal reason, and a logical one for him to do anything that might sacrifice his personal freedom.
“No record and no witnesses. He will go to any length to make this so.”
As a preternatural, Alessandro is a cold and calculated killer. “About as affectionate as a poisonous jellyfish, and just as easy to keep hold of” is how he's described by the person closest to him. He fights in a purely ungentlemanly manner. He'd even been thrown out of places for the lack of rules or decorum used in “proper” fights. He is precisely the sort to take a gun into a knife fight. He's also the sort that thoroughly enjoys doing it. He knows what he is good at. He is nearly always well aware of his surroundings and knows when he's being watched. He doesn't hesitate to kill anyone who gets in the way of whatever his mission might be. While in Egypt, he goes so far as burning all evidence of a jackal-headed werewolf mummy rather than the truth of it come out. He's practical and meticulous, planning far ahead. He's even made arrangements with his valet as for what will happen to his body when he dies.
“This gave him a good excuse to find out what she knew. He’d be terribly, terribly understanding and sympathetic.”
Alessandro is a very opportunistic individual. He takes advantage of the situation as presented to him and makes the best of it. He uses his schooling at Oxford to get out from under the thumb of the Templars, but still strings them along so that he can have written protection from the Pope himself. He sleeps with both men and women without reservation, something rather scandalous in strict Victorian sensibilities. He's reported to be rather adventurous in his sexual proclivities according to the journals he left his daughter.
He meets and marries his wife after killing her brother, getting close to her only to get information. They are married for 5 years where in he's rarely home as he's “traveling”. He abandons her the second she gets pregnant (preternatural people cannot share the same air and his kind breeds true), so that his child won't die simply by his being around. He shows his affection for her as a toddler by watching her with a spyglass from across a large park. His valet claims this act is the deepest admittance of his undying affection for her. He gives up his patent control over the production of mechanicals to the government to insure this daughter's protection, so as to keep her out of the hands of the Templars. He has a heated affair with a werewolf while still married to an abandoned pregnant woman. He continues to grow a supernatural suppressing plague. All because he's given a chance and he takes it. He will use whoever and whatever he has to, to keep his way of life.
The fact that he does all this and gets away with it leads him to be overconfident. He is so certain of himself, of his planning and his training and his abilities, that he is fallible. He's blindsided by both the archeologist and a poorly dressed baronette in Egypt and nearly dies. He goes after a raving lunatic Alpha Werewolf on the night of a full moon. He could have waited until a more opportune moment, but killing the alpha at that moment would have sent a message. He went in thinking he'd be able to do it and save the person who might very well have been the love of his life. After all, he's Alessandro Tarabotti and killing monsters is what he does best. This brash, egotistic way of thinking is what ultimately gets him killed.
Powers and Abilities:
Supernatural nullifying touch: I have an opt out for this ability explained here but the short version is that skin on skin contact with Alessandro turns supernatural creatures fully human.
Fighting prowess: he's been trained since age 5 to track down, fight, and kill supernaturals
Inventor: Alessandro invented and owned the patent for the production of mechanicals. He's also pretty quick at picking up technology
Inventory: his tiny one shot pistol hidden up his sleeve, a pocket full of peppermint sticks, and a miniature antikythera device (it measures moon phases)
